1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to the legislature; changing the timing for payment of compensation to
1.3legislators; authorizing payments for additional travel during special sessions;
1.4amending Minnesota Statutes 2008, sections 3.099, subdivision 1; 3.103.
1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.6    Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2008, section 3.099, subdivision 1, is amended to read:
1.7    Subdivision 1. Pay days; mileage; per diem. The compensation of each member
1.8of the legislature is due on the first day of the regular legislative session of the term and
1.9payable in equal parts on January 15, in the first month of each term within five days after
1.10the member takes the oath of office and on the first day of each following month during
1.11the term for which the member was elected. The compensation of each member of the
1.12legislature elected at a special election is due on the day the member takes the oath of
1.13office and payable within ten days of taking the oath for the remaining part of the month
1.14in which the oath was taken, and then in equal parts on the first day of each following
1.15month during the term for which the member was elected.
1.16Each member shall receive mileage for necessary travel to the place of meeting and
1.17returning to the member's residence in the amount and for trips as authorized by the senate
1.18for senate members and by the house of representatives for house members.
1.19Each member shall also receive per diem living expenses during a regular or special
1.20session of the legislature in the amounts and for the purposes as determined by the senate
1.21for senate members and by the house of representatives for house members.
1.22On January 15 in the first month of each term and on the first day of each following
1.23month, the secretary of the senate and the chief clerk of the house of representatives shall
2.1certify to the commissioner of finance, in duplicate, the amount of compensation then
2.2payable to each member of their respective houses and its total.

2.3    Sec. 2. Minnesota Statutes 2008, section 3.103, is amended to read:
2.43.103 SPECIAL SESSION LIVING EXPENSES.
2.5Each member of the legislature, during a special session, shall be reimbursed
2.6for expenses incurred in the performance of duties in the same amounts, for the same
2.7purposes, and in the same manner as authorized for senators and members of the house of
2.8representatives at the last regular session before the special session. Reimbursement for
2.9travel shall not exceed one round trip per member for each seven calendar days in which
2.10the legislature meets in the special session.
